Wow! On a hot day and what can refresh one in a NY minute? Arinto 2009 can! A very good citrus mineral dry wine thatquenches the thirst. Can’t say enough about good Portuguese white wines, especially during a heat wave in Chicago! For Chicagoans, I found it at our local wine shop, In Fine Spirits.

After a busy school year, we had a nice quiet dinner together on our second night in Oaxaca, Mexico. Casa Oaxaca offers a intimate simple elegant place for a great dinner. The staff also promoted Mexican wines.

Very good white wine from Patagonia washed up on our shores in Andersonville, Chicago. Around the corner at the Hollywood Pantry, I found good value Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blend for $9.99. I have had very good luck with wines from the Patagonia. Plenty of good flavor. We paired it with steamed asparagus. A winner!

Argie Andes Bonarda 2007

Argie bonarda is a great dark fruit bomb for $11.99 at Andersonville´s In Fine Spirits. I compare it to the great fruit bombs like Chono´s Reserve Cab or Carmenere. I have to say I give the edge to this bonarda.

Alvear´s Cream Montilla Spain

This is my favorite sherry now. A great value sherry. First gotten at In Fine Spirits in Andersonville and then at Binny´s South Loop shop. A very, very smooth sherry made of Pedro Ximenez grapes. It´s smoothness and great taste makes it exceptional in my mind. Great to pair with blue cheese. Great to drink by itself. At $12.99 to 14.99, for my money a great value.

Funky Llama Malbec 2008

Wow! Found this decent light malbec from Mendoza for $4.99 at Binny´s South Loop store. Nice fruit and spice for the price. Went down good with some spicy beef tacos.

Venta Morales Tempranillo 2008

We are always looking out for good value wines. This Jorge Ordoñez selection is a good value for $6.99 at Binny´s South Loop store. I must say that this 100% tempranillo from La Mancha offers plenty of dark fruit. We have had good luck with wines from La Mancha, Spain.

Castaño Monastrell 2008

A great value %100 monastrell from Yecla, Spain provides decent red fruit and brightness. Found at Binny´s South Loop location for $6.99. We recently had a 2007 vintage and this a nice upgrade in flavor in the 2008 vintage!
